Preaching and Praying as Spiritual Warfare

Knowing your enemy is key to knowing how to defeat your enemy. Let me give you an example of this. Pioneer missionary work in Africa used to be very dangerous. African chiefs were suspicious of anything new and of anyone from outside their immediate tribe, which made their reactions unpredictable. Then there were the dangers posed by wild animals and snakes. To cap all this, malaria killed more missionaries than the African chiefs and wildlife combined. For many years, no one knew what caused malaria and so it was almost impossible to combat it. All that could be done was to try to treat the symptoms with quinine. It was not until 1880 that the parasite causing malaria was finally identified. That was a major breakthrough. Then in 1897 came the discovery that the parasite was spread by the Anopheles mosquito. Since then, much effort has been put into finding ways to eradicate this mosquito and protect people from being bitten. Recently, there has been a big push to encourage people to sleep under mosquito nets that have been treated with an insecticide. As a result of these measures, thousands of lives have been saved. Knowing the enemy has made it possible to attack and defeat the enemy.

We as pastoral preachers also have an enemy we need to be working hard to defeat. What is this enemy? It is our fallen human nature.
